What class should I attend if I am new to yoga?
Our Yoga Basics classes as well as Anusara One classes are designed specifically for beginners. These are ongoing classes so you can begin at any time. Occasionally we will offer an Introduction to Yoga Series which is taught in a structured 5, 6 or 8 week session. If you are brand new to yoga and not sure about starting in a class, perhaps a private session or two with one of our instructors would help you to ease into a class. For more information on private (or semi-private) classes, please call or email us.
Top What do I wear?
Most people wear comfortable clothing similar to what they would wear for other forms of exercise. Women wear shirts or tank tops and leggings and men wear exercise pants (not baggy) or shorts and shirts. Please avoid wearing very baggy pants that hide alignment of knees and/or ankles.
Top What do I need to bring?
If you have your own sticky mat you may wish to bring it with you. If not, we have sanitized mats for rent for $1.00 as well as a limited number of extra mats available for your use.
For Power Vinyasa classes you will need a towel (bath size or larger) and water. Towels are available for rental for $1.00 and bottled water can be purchased for $1.00.
Props such as blankets, blocks & straps are provided for your use.
Top How many times a week do I need to come?
Once a week is a minimum, twice a week is better and three times a week is optimum. BUT if you can only find time in your schedule for once a week BY ALL MEANS COMMIT to once a week for a period of 2 to 3 months as a starting point. This will give you the time you need to really notice the profound effect a yoga practice will have on your body, mind and spirit! Yoga works when you are doing it but when you stop, so will the benefits of practice.
Top What about private classes?
Private classes are available for individuals or for groups, at our location or yours. Please contact us if you would like more information or are interested in scheduling a private.
Top What does yoga have to do with religion?
Yoga has its roots in the ancient philosophical writings of India and is usually described as a philosophy, sometimes a science and even an art, but is not considered a religion. It does not conflict with any religion and does not contain dogma. The practices can be applied to one's personal beliefs are designed to remove obstacles that stand in the way of one's ability to contact a sense of stillness, peace and clarity.
Top What does the word "yoga" mean?
The word yoga comes from the root "yug" which means "to join" so yoga means union and refers to the uniting of various aspects of oneself to experience a sense of oneness.
Top What kind of yoga do you teach at YogaSource?
The classes taught at YogaSource fall under the category of Hatha Yoga. The term hatha means sun/moon and refers to uniting the active or strong aspects of oneself (sun) with passive or flexible and more receptive qualities (moon) to bring balance. In Hatha Yoga the physical body is used as a sort of laboratory to learn from. We use postures (Asanas) and breath (Pranayama) to explore and free ourselves from patterns of conditioning which limit our ability to be present to ourselves and others. Since we are always evolving and changing, we all have different needs at different times so some of the classes are more concerned with details of alignment, others with strength building and others with mindfulness. See Class Descriptions for more detailed information about specific classes and if you have questions contact us.
